Former Hemsford Residents
In the summer 2014 I was visited at Hemsford House by two lovely ladies and a gentleman who were researching their family tree. They told me that they thought that their relatives had previously lived in the farmhouse in the 1870's which was around the time the farmhouse was built, although we believe that there were buildings on this site long before that. Its fascinating to discover some more of the history of our home.
Liz Wright from Ashford in Kent recently wrote to me with the picture above, Liz says:
"This picture shows the seven Parnell sisters, the daughters of Thomas and Emily Parnell (nee Tucker). My grandmother Ruby Goldie (nee Parnell) is third from the right. The family grew up at Hemsford. There were three older brothers, as well as the seven girls. I remember her telling stories of her girlhood on a big farm in Devon, picking apples and seeing milk being churned. They were a very close and happy family. Ruby, one of the youngest children, was born in 1884, so it's likely the family first lived there in the 1870s and Thomas and Emily may have been the original tenants when the farm was built. They are buried in Totnes churchyard alongside their eldest daughter who stayed with them in Devon."
I would like to thank Liz and her family for letting us use this picture on this website.
