Flooding at Hemsford
Flooding is a regular occurence at Hemsford. Since we have lived at Hemsford from 1999 flooding has occured normally during the winter, although even happening in July in the very wet summer of 2012.
Hemsford is located between the Ambrook and the River Hems and these two tributaries of the River Dart meet at Two bridges which is a few hundred yards from the settlement at Hemsford.
The former farmhouse and barn conversions have never been infiltrated by flood water, although other local nearby properties have suffered from flood damage on occasion. The flooding is generally as a result of high tides and plenty of rain.
Both rivers spill over their banks and flood the lane and fields surrounding Ford Bridge and Two Bridges. Luckily the flooding has never been anything other than short lived and normally subsides once the tide ebbs at Totnes.
