Hemsford is a small hamlet near Littlehempston, Totnes, which comprises of 17 properties. Hemsford falls within Teignbridge District Council authority and Broadhempston Parish and is located about 1 mile from Staverton, about 1 Mile from Littlehempston, 1 Mile from Broadhempston and within 3 miles of Totnes, Devon.
Hemsford has a thriving community, with at present around 45 permanent residents living in the hamlet amongst the converted barns and former farmhouse.
The properties at Hemsford all vary vastly in size and style, with a traditional farmhouse, a former stable building and 3 other barns converted into the small cottage style properties with 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms. There has been a settlement at Hemsford for at least the past 150 years as indicated by the census records. The farm and surrounding buildings are very typical of the Victorian styles, with granite, limestone and "red rubbers" in the brickwork surrounding the doors and windows.
Hemsford has an interesting history and this website documents both in words and pictures some of this varied history. The concept of this website is to keep and maintain a modern history of Hemsford, in particular since 1999. This website has been created by me, Liz Jeffery purely to keep my own documentary history of Hemsford and is solely my own opinions, thoughts, musings and photographs and does not represent in any way the other residents of neighbouring properties at Hemsford. Myself and my family have lived at Hemsford since 1999 and my husband Alan and I have brought up our family here.
Hemsford Management Ltd is a non-profit making organisation originally handed over to residents in 2001 in order to manage the communal facilities surrounding the 17 properties. Most of the properties at Hemsford are shareholders in Hemsford Management Ltd apart from the property known as "The Stables". Hemsford Management is currently managed by an agency.
The communal facilities at Hemsford are owned by Hemsford Management Ltd and comprise of a driveway, tennis court, equestrian arena, car parking, extensive grounds, communal water supply, and communal sewage treatment plant.
